Gitgit Waterfall Bali

Monday, August 25, 2008

Located 10km to the south of Singaraja, the cascading Gitgit Waterfalls are not far from the main road.

A spectacular 40 metres of crystal clear water rushing headlong into a seemingly bottomless pool that tempts visitors with a tantalisingly refreshing swim. But should you decide to succumb to the charms of the falls, beware; but not of any physical danger - local legend has it that couples who bath together at the lovely pools will eventually separate

The largest is the first, Gitgit. This is a very scenic waterfall that cascades 40 meters into a pool at the base of a rock face. The pool is large enough for swimming, but the water is usually pretty cold! The area is quite lovely, unfortunately it is heavily populated with tourist touts in little shacks selling all varieties of your typical tourist trappings.

From the first waterfall there is supposedly a walking trail you can follow upstream to Gitgit Multi-tier. We asked, but no one seemed to know (guess we should have gotten a guide after all...). So, instead of a scenic hike (if it does in fact exist) we drove a kilometer up the road to another parking area and followed the paved trail. There are no touts here past the parking lot. This waterfall is, as the name implies, actually a series of cascades. This is a great one. Few people, gorgeous views, and lots of pools absolutely perfect for swimming or a good soak. Further up the road is yet another waterfall, Gitgit Double. This one is not as impressive as the first two, but you can see down to Multi-tier from Double -- a nice view.
